Allergy and Intolerance Testing

Holistic List Allergy TestingA food intolerance is where the body is unable to properly digest a certain food. The results can be  abdominal discomfort, bloating, constipation or diarrhoea. It may also cause skin rashes.

An allergy on the other hand is down the bodies immune system, and certain foods can cause various parts of the body to react. In some cases a severe allergy can be life threatening. Symptoms of food allergies can be tingling or itching in the mouth, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, nasal congestion or trouble breathing, dizziness, abdominal pain or nausea.

There are 14 allergens now covered by UK legislation that people are allergic or intolerant to which include:

  • Celery
  • Cereals containing gluten (such as barley and oats)
  • Crustaceans (such as prawns, crabs and lobsters)
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Lupin
  • Milk
  • Molluscs (such as mussels and oysters)
  • Mustard
  • Peanuts
  • Sesame
  • Soybeans
  • Sulphur dioxide and sulphites (at a concentration of more than ten parts per million)
  • Tree nuts (such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios and macadamia nuts).

Different types of allergy and intolerance testing is available, from sensitivity tests that use hair samples, to blood tests, DNA tests, exclusion diets and food diaries.

Your practitioner will advise which type of test is the best for you.
