How to Relax – Part Five – A Simple Visualisation Exercise

How to Relax Part Five Holistic List

The next step in our essential relaxation guide is this simple visualisation exercise

This exercise involves using an image as a way to focus the mind. Create in your mind an ideal spot to relax. It can be:

  • real or imaginary
  • somewhere you will find restful, calming, safe and happy
  • a place you would want to return to whenever you feel the need to relax
Visualisation Holistic List

The place that I imagine is a remote lakeside, with a mountainous backdrop, with a grassy outcrop in front of the lake. I imagine that I’m laying or sitting by the lake, my dog by my side, and all is well with the world.

To begin, close your eyes and take a slow, regular breath in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Become aware of your breathing. Then, focus on your relaxation place in all its detail.

Imagine your place in as much detail as you can – use your senses to make it as real as possible – what can you see, hear, smell and feel? See yourself comfortably enjoying this place.

Do this exercise for 10 to 20 minutes, all the while imagining yourself feeling at peace. When you are ready, bring your focus back to the room, open your eyes and see how relaxed you feel.

How did you feel after this visualisation exercise? Did you find the visualisation easy to do?
